Don’t know if others are following this project, but its worth a look -
…interesting project - i think i saw the HD-iteration-videos a couple of years ago…
…but: complete overkill! - great!
…
cool heh?
…definitely cool! - i just wonder: is ‘4K’ really worth all that fuss? - at the moment i feel that
- we haven’t explored HD exhaustively yet
- resolutions higher than HD (and even that is too much already sometimes) might distract from the artistic contents due to the much too clear imagery
- by delivering too much information it is taking away the dreamy look which involves the viewers deeply by forcing them to add missing pieces from their own imagination
- the setup is just too big to be transportable/played at live events
I don’t know about too big, you can move it if you want to, though its an installation rather than a performance instrument. I love the scope of the instrument. I love how intense and long running his obsession with making optical feedback has been.
Personally I agree with you, the 4K version does not give anything more than was there with the HD version. In fact, there is so much detail, that it does leave a different feeling; it is over-complete, there is less to think about and become part of. It may as well be digital, for the look of it.
I have to say I love the digital look of, say the GWDSK, those crisp edges and shiny textures are sick. But for optical feedback, if it looks digital, then I don’t really see the gain, visually speaking. (again, this is just my opinion)
** I have to say, I much prefer messing about with hardware than software, but if I want the digital look, I’ll use software
The race to conform to HD, 4K, 8K is really, in itself a bit silly. I think sometimes its good to have such detail, but for many things, the last vestiges of imagination are again cut out of the equation. (but for video art, who is to say what is silly!)
I think HD modules and SD modules are equally brilliant. For 4K, the complexity and cost, vs the artistic returns, are not really a balanced curve, in my opinion.
It is the same over driven scaling we see in many other areas as well, its systemic. The format is never allowed to saturate and explore the depths of, before it is moved into obsolescence by a new format. . .
…ok, let me re-phrase this (typing on a keyboard now instead of my phone
): for me this setup would not work for the events i am ‘performing’ at as this would fill the whole space available and would not leave any room for the main-acts aka the musicians…
…however, inspired by your post and this really nice toy/tool, i plan to try and build something similar, much smaller (perhaps just one camera instead of three, two monitors instead of five) and (for me) more portable and see if something worthwhile could be done with this…
I have wanted to do this for a while with smaller screens, but I found the beam-splitter glass very hard to find in the size I needed - I never found an affordable piece that size in europe, when I was looking.
I thought you were talking about this exact rig, which he does transport around and use. Of course, it’s too large for small scale performance. I agreed with you on that point in my original reply.
…i’ll start out with a 28x28cm piece of splitter glass i got from eBay - which might be delivered today already!…
…this is the one i got:

…and my plan is to use a ‘simple’ 3D-printer-rails for my initial tests - those are the ones i bought (delivered today):

…this is just to put ‘something’ together to learn where the difficulties of such a project are…
…unfortunately i am off to Bangkok today - so i will only get around to play with the stuff next week or the one thereafter…
