Hello everyone hope you all are doing well this is just a continuation of my other post about recommendations for rescanning. I just got my tax return back and want to invest it into a camera specifically for rescanning my CRT, Andrei recommended something in the Panasonic GX series, and this is what I came across, my budget is 1k-2k, Panasonic LUMIX GX9 Mirrorless Camera with 12-60mm F3.5-5.6 Lens - DC-GX9M
Just want to know if anyone also recommends this camera or if they recommend something else with in the same line of cameras. My main concern is having a camera that I can accurately record what my CRT outputs because of recent my current camera has not been accurately recording whatās on screen. Iām open to any camera within the budget and would love to hear what you guys use to rescan your CRTs. Any help will do and is much appreciated.
ā¦if i may recommend something/a camera: Lumix G7/G70 (depending on where you live) around 150-200 euros or the next better price-sensitive solution Lumix GH5 (the old one is sufficient, i have three of them, very happy) around 550-600 eurosā¦
Iāll second the notion from @fairplay that a used camera a generation or two older can get you a better camera within a given budget.
Consider also your lens choice. For rescanning Iād Iād suggest a macro lens which will be optimized for working close up rather than an all purpose kit zoom. Most macro lenses are flat field designs providing minimal distortion and placing focus in a flat plane rather than a curved plane making it easier to get even sharpness across the CRT. Adapting an older manual focus macro lens can be an inexpensive option. I have found the 55mm Nikkor is particularly adept (on a Fuji X-H1, which I also rec for your purposesāthough not quite as inexpensive as the GH5 @Fairplay suggests itād be well within your budget). Another good option might be a Vivitar Series I 90-180mm flat field macro zoom originally intended for dental practices. You get the benefits of a macro lens and the convenience of a zoom. Sometimes they pop up cheap in oddball lensmounts.
Thank you both for your suggestions @fairplay and @mnm207 I have found two cameras in particular based off of your guys feedback. I found a Fuji XH-1 and a lumix GH-5, Iām not gonna lie I donāt know much about lens so Iām not sure if these are lens you guys recommended. But Iāll list them here and maybe you guys could just help me figure out which one is more suited for filming a crt! I really appreciate your guys help and time it really means a lot to me it has been hard for me to figure out this on my own so it really means the world to me that there are people like yall to help me out.
ā¦boah! - i do not know that Fuji-Camera, so i cannot comment on that oneā¦
ā¦regarding the Nikkor-lens i have been reading up on that one - found a lot of positive comments on the 2.8-variant - and my click-to-buy-finger is currently hovering over an offer that sounds really goodā¦would need an adaptor additionally, thoughā¦
ā¦the GH5 is a camera that for me really works - i use it mostly for my higher-quality* live-streaming and video-recording with a Leica 9mm lens (well, three of those cameras) - for rescanning with the GH5 i have bought a Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. Mega O.I.S. lens which about in the same pricerange as the above mentioned Nikkor-lens, but i have not yet used itā¦it receives the same positive comments regarding the image qualitiy as the Nikkor-lens in the online reviewsā¦
*for the regular livestreams i use ZowieTek PTZ-cameras which work really good for such projects (i really like the last livestream and watch it over-and-over-again - need to make another one soon ):
Prices on both listings look fair. Between the two Iād go for the GH5 unless you really want that wide lens in the Fuji kit.
The GH5 w/12-35 at $700 plus a Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 that @fairplay noted would be a solid kit for general use and rescanning. If prices on that Macro Elmarit arenāt all that much more than used 55mm Nikkorsāthen the native m4/3 lens is probably the better choice.
OT, but these layperson friendly histories of lens designs written by Nikon lens designers are fun; the Micro-Nikkorās is here: parts one and two.
Hello there! I ended up buying a lumix gh5, I was going to buy a lens for it, is this the one you recommended? And do I need an adapter or anything to use it or will it fit in? Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!
ā¦yes, this is [the] one [of the] lense[s] i have [and used]ā¦
ā¦the thing is: i bought the other (Nikkor) macro-lens recommended in this thread too and it is still on its way from italy to here - so i cannot compare those at the momentā¦
ā¦but: i like the Leica lens a lot! - it is a great lens and works perfect with the GH-5ā¦
Also macro extension tubes can be a nice addon if you have some non-macro lenses. They are cheap and you loose some light with them but for a light emmiting device as a CRT can do a good job with a 50 or 35mm regular lense. https://es.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-Macro-extension-tube-.html
ā¦slightly - perhaps very far - OT - this i filmed last week with the Leica lens (not rescanning, though - Hardware Jams weekend challenge contribution):
Thank you so much for your help! I got my body for the lumix I was wondering what kind of settings are you running on it for rescanning this would help a lot Iām trying to watch a tutorial about setting it up but it doesnāt really apply to rescanning a crt!
ā¦i try and i err - i use different CRTs in different setups, and every setup - even every session - requires another setup-of-settingsā¦
ā¦sometimes i put both the screen and the camera under a cloth to keep out/diffuse light in the room, sometimes i dont; sometimes i use the Sony Trinitron (very flat surface) and at other times some random CRT that i have collected over the years and (at the moment) store in my garage (where it seems to be perhaps a little wet, so iāll have to move them soon, very soon! ā note to self)ā¦
ā¦i am in the process (this process takes mostly place in my head at the moment) of trying to film/rescan stuff either in my garage (which is pretty far - around 60 metres from where i do the video-stuff usually) or to move one or the other screen to my basement, but some of the more interesting ones are REALLY HEAVYā¦
ā¦for me there is a lot of experimentation and no fixed formula i rely on - usually i switch everything on - get things going - and then i play around with the video-stuff as well as on the recording sideā¦
ā¦as a side - and almoste completely unrelated - note: thank you for the tipp with the Nikkor-Micro-lens - it arrived here today and i hope to try it out soon; also, while browsing offers, i fell in a trap and bought a couple of more vintage lenses (Helios 40-2, Nikkor 50/1.2 and 1.4, Carl Zeiss Jena MC Flektogon 35/2.4 etc) - all of which i hope to put to good use for an upcoming video-projectā¦weāll seeā¦(have to stay away from eBay! ā another note to self)ā¦
