Edirol V4/V8 Midi sync

Hi everyone. I am planning on buying one of these as my first mixer, specifically because of the Midi capability. My question is can the bpm setting sync over midi? I’ve read both manuals. The bpm section makes no reference to midi, and the midi section shows control over the bpm knob. I’m not sure if that means you can sync bpm over midi, or if you can assign a cc message to control the knob. I have a lot of experience with midi, but video mixing is new to me. It seems intuitive that it would function just like my music rig, but I have no clue.

I have a V4 and some analog midi gear, I can try it later and let you know.

What were you planning on using the midi sync bpm for?

someone on the Video_Waaaves FB group answered the question. I want to sync effects, fades, and wipes to the bpm of a song being played from midi capable music gear. It turns out that this does work, so I think i’m going to go ahead and purchase one.

Sweet, I’m glad that it’s gonna work for you.

If you’re trying to decide between V4 and V8, go V8 the 4 extra inputs are helpful.

I wrote a Max for Live device that controls the V4 over MIDI. I tried to implement as many controls as I could. Pretty sure you can only turn BPM Sync On or Off over MIDI, not control the setting. On the V8 I think you can control the setting as well.

have you tried reading the manuals for those mixers? you can find the PDFs here: Video Equipment Manuals

I have a V8, I haven’t tried using MIDI but the manual seems to be relatively clear about what’s possible and what’s not.

possibly useful: the Roland Edirol v8 thread and the other posts tagged #mixer

Well I managed to sell a Keyboard and get a v8 at an alright price. It should arrive today, so I’ll post if I can get this to work. To jroman and pixelflowers’ comments, I have read the manual and bpm sync via midi clock is not specifically mentioned. I want to sync the clock to an MPC (or whatever clock source). I don’t know why roland would make a piece of midi gear that has bpm, midi, and no midi sync, but it certainly sounds possible in this case. If it doesn’t it will be easy enough to just set the bpm setting manually.

Here is a super crude max patch i made as an example of how the v4 can be controlled with midi beyond just midi sync. all of the effects can be toggled and the wipes can be controlled too.

I’ve had a couple good sessions with the V8 now. The BPM sync works great with other gear, but only controls the crossfader. It turns out that the manual actually does specifically say this, and I just didn’t know how to properly read a midi implementation chart. What is even better than bpm sync is using my digitakt to sequence various effects parameter changes! I’d love to use the MAX patches suggested, but do not currently poses an ableton or max license (I use bitwig). The effects in the V8 are awesome! Also useful is the number of inputs and outputs, which provide lots of opportunity for feedback experiments. The VGA input leaves something to be desired, but it may be that the video output of my computer just cant support a resolution that works well. I would highly recommend this specific mixer to anyone who wants to integrate video into an electronic music setup. The midi implementation is very thorough, and this is clearly what the mixer was designed for.
