Sending MIDI CC from an Ableton MIDI instrument to VDMX?

Howdy!

I want to transmit data from the “Envelope MIDI” object in Ableton 11 as a CC to modulate parameters in VDMX. In this screen recording I’m showing that this MIDI device can modulate parameters internal to Ableton. However, I’m not sure how to send this information outside Ableton as a MIDI CC value.

My ultimate goal is to use this MIDI data to modulate a parameter in VDMX e.g. brightness or hue or something.

Has anyone succeeded in this or something similar ?

Okay, I figured out how to solve this per my friend’s recommendation of VCV Rack.

In essence, using VCV Rack you can convert “CV” from e.g. an LFO into MIDI CC with the “CV to MIDI” module. Then I routed this to the “To VDMX” virtual MIDI device.

In my example I’m triggering an envelope generator in VCV with MIDI notes from Ableton. The envelope output is then converted to MIDI which modulates a parameter in VDMX. (it looks choppy because my 11 year old macbook was choking lol) Yippee!

i think just a virtual midibus is the search term you are looking for to route a midi signal between applications on a single computer. believe that theres something just baked into OSX you can use, outlined here

Thanks! This is what I ended up doing. Sadly my 2015 Macbook Pro can’t handle Ableton, VDMX, and VCV Rack running simultaneously :sob:
