I did Genuary last January 2025, which is a project where you do one creative coding sketch per day, and each day you are given a prompt, for the direction or concept that should be. I had a lot of fun doing this, and was hoping to do it again this year, but wanted to do something more video circuits aligned. I feel the prompts this year are a little less “poetic”, and it will also be a push to lever in video circuits stuff into that, so I am here to float the idea:
VENUARY 2026
Basically, submit a phrase or word or quote or sound or concept or fact or number, and then we assign these to the days of January, 1-31, and create something each day on the prompt.
We can post them here, and also on usual socials, using #venuary and #venuary1#venuary2#venuary3 etc.
It’s quite last minute (2 days to go), but can knock-up a microsite, if can get this off the ground / not just chatting nonsense into the void. So encouraging contributions here - just type anything that comes to mind - here are a couple of quotes that sprung to mind:
Wenn zu perfekt Gott ist bose (Nam June Paik)
Whether a hundred or a thousand bottles pass through your bladder - nothing more than a filter (must have sound)
Would be up for that! But February is a busy one, and also like last minute preparation. Maybe something in Spring could be nice - flowers start to bloom, life starts to pick up again - also because it would be possible to turn April into Vavril, and on the 14th have to do Vavril 14th
i like the idea! scanlines can be a slow moving social medium (which i like about it haha) so i just saw this. if i know, say, 2 weeks in advance, i can probably plan around something like this any month. here’s a prompt idea:
infrathin.
it’s a thing from marcel duchamp, concept very much open to interpretation (hence fun as a prompt).
let me know if peeps are on board. also, yay, websites!
heres some words from a general titles hoarding doc i keep

Love the suggestions! And yes for certain let’s pencil it in for April - will circle back to put together a micro-site closer to the date, and for now please keep submitting suggestions
Love it, yes - I’m a bit wrapped up until next week but will then get onto website, been working on some micro/static site gubbins for pulling it together. Suggestions for aesthetics or how to do this welcome, and I’ll circle in with Paloma.
…sorry, i am too tired - tried to read the thread three times now and do not get the task at hand: make one video per day? - make those videos relate somehow - how?!? - to the words above?…
…i made a three hours livestream and a 1-minute vlog this week: have i made ‘points’ with those already?…
…i will not be able to post a video every day - i might be able to post 30 videos in a 30 days time-span though - what is required to fulfill the requirements?…
in reply to @fairplay but also my comments in general:
i think the idea is that before the month begins, we will gather all of the prompts people came up with and match each of them with 1 specific day in april, so there would be 1 prompt per day for a total of 30 days.
i tried to do 1 video per day once, and it was kind of stressful and i didn’t end up doing it for the whole month, BUT i did make a lot of cool stuff in a short period of time.
for this (vavril?) i think anyone can participate to whatever degree they want - the prompts are like, a source of inspiration, not a mandate. i don’t think there should be any gatekeeping to posting in the thread or using the hashtag. miss a day? no problem. made two videos in one day? post em both, why not. it should be like, a fun thing, no pressure, or just enough pressure to make you do something you already wanted to do, if it’s helpful!
when this actually happens, i think we should start a new thread with the actual month we’re doing it (april, not january) and a clear explanation as the first post, including the full list of prompts, so that people don’t have to do detective work to figure out what’s going on
100% as Paloma said - when I checked out the Genuary site it looks like they’ve had a lot of people feeling pressured, so it would be pretty much the same as this on the “yo, chill ya boots” participation - as much or as little internal motivation as comfortable. I found it challenging in 2025 and chose to “push myself”, but mixed it up by trying to mix it up - for example taking a bike ride out somewhere to grab photos or videos, then doing something later in the evening. Variety as spice of life, and I’m thinking of techniques of closed-eyes-drawing, or opening eyes for 2 seconds, closed for 5 seconds, whatever works to “hack” patterns and switch it up. Again, no pressure - and it could be a single project you’re working on, with updates each day, or attempting some new technique every day, or just compositing together phone footage in iMovie on the bus.
I suppose at this stage, we could be thinking “things that AI could never replicate” and also “things that could never be data-scraped or programmatically analysed”
…i am still not up to speed - and i am really sorry about that, but still hope for your help:
in the first couple of posts the ‚task/target‘ is described as ‚create something‘ - so, what is ‚something‘?
The site linked to in the first post is a site that invites people to ‚code‘ something, ‚prepare a framework before january‘.
Given the general topic of the scanlines-site i guess this would translate into ‚film/make a video/make video art/code/glitch/patch‘ to create a visual media (video) to share on this site.
Is this the idea? - make a video related to the prompts for each day in april and post it here?
No, all good - this is a “work out what to do” thread, not prescriptive. I think we got there so I’m working on the microsite today, and then will circle back with you for feedback would be appreciated - I’m g@sinnott.cc so drop me a “hi” if you can!
Back from an event in Berlin - tried to argue for the unification of Cyprus, and it was decided I must be a Russian agent, problematic subversive, or quite mad.
