What to do with an old oscilloscope tube?

So the old, trashpicked analog scope that I’ve been lugging around for the last decade for the handful of times a year I actually need to use a scope died this summer, but the tube is still good - the trace just won’t sync to anything now, internal or external, so all I can get is a dot or a vertical line, and it’s not something I could fix myself as far as I can tell.

I’m leaning toward pulling the tube and building something like this:

plus

to get a small green phosphor monochrome display for rescanning.

Anyone ever done anything like this, have any tips or warnings (other than the standard precautions)? Other ideas?
